Author guidelines

Everything required to prepare a manuscript for the HGU Research Journal: article types and requirements, formatting rules, editorial policies, and a pre-submission checklist. Start from the official template to save a revision round.

Formatting

House style rules

Manuscripts that depart from these rules are returned before review. The downloadable template already applies every rule in this section.

Page setup

  • US Letter or A4, portrait, 1-inch (2.54 cm) margins on all sides.
  • 12pt serif body text (Times New Roman or equivalent), double-spaced throughout.
  • First line of every paragraph indented 0.5 inch; no blank line between paragraphs.
  • Continuous line numbers are welcome but not required; page numbers bottom-centre.

Headings

  • Maximum three levels, numbered decimally: 1., 1.1, 1.1.1.
  • Level 1 bold, 16pt; level 2 bold, 13pt; level 3 bold italic, 12pt.
  • Do not use all-caps headings and do not begin a section on a forced new page.

Title, abstract and keywords

  • Title in title case, 15 words maximum, no abbreviations.
  • Structured abstract of 150–250 words: background, purpose, methods, results, conclusion.
  • Four to six keywords, lower case, separated by semicolons.

Tables and figures

  • Numbered sequentially in order of first mention (Table 1, Figure 1).
  • Titles above tables, captions below figures; add a source line for reused material.
  • Figures supplied at 300 dpi minimum in PNG, TIFF or vector PDF; legible in greyscale.
  • No screenshots of tables — supply tables as editable text.

Language and style

  • British or American spelling, applied consistently within the manuscript.
  • Define every abbreviation at first use; avoid abbreviations in the title and abstract.
  • SI units, with non-SI equivalents in parentheses where conventional in the field.
  • Statistics reported with test statistic, degrees of freedom, exact p value and effect size.

References

  • APA 7th edition for in-text citations and the reference list, without exception.
  • Alphabetical reference list with a 0.5-inch hanging indent.
  • DOIs given as full https links; retrieval dates only for unstable sources.
  • Every in-text citation must appear in the list, and every entry must be cited.

Files to upload

  • Manuscript (.docx preferred, PDF accepted) fully anonymised for blind review.
  • Title page as a separate file with names, affiliations, ORCID iDs and corresponding author.
  • Figures as separate files when larger than 2 MB in total.
